Analysis of 2024 SLED Annual Report

Based on the 2024 Crime in South Carolina report, Beaufort County generally mirrored the statewide trend of declining crime rates, showing notable reductions in both overall violent and property crime categories compared to the previous year. The county-wide data indicates a broad improvement in public safety metrics, with the most significant driver of this decline being a substantial drop in reported aggravated assaults. While most major crime categories saw reductions or remained stable, the data did reveal a divergence in sexual battery cases, which increased by a double-digit percentage, standing out against the otherwise positive trends across the county.

In terms of violent crime, the county saw improvements in nearly every metric. Reported homicides decreased slightly from 20 incidents in 2023 to 18 in 2024, and robberies remained relatively flat, dropping from 48 to 46 incidents. The most impactful change was in aggravated assaults, which fell significantly from 575 incidents in 2023 to 481 in 2024. However, sexual battery offenses presented a concerning rise, increasing from 47 reported cases in 2023 to 58 in 2024.

Property crime trends were consistently positive across all reported categories. Larceny, which constitutes the highest volume of crimes in the area, decreased from 2,305 incidents to 2,192. Motor vehicle thefts also saw a significant reduction, dropping from 265 to 223, while breaking and entering incidents remained stable with a slight decline from 315 to 310. Additionally, incidents of arson were nearly halved, falling from 22 cases in the previous year to just 12 in 2024.

A closer look at specific law enforcement agencies reveals distinct localized trends that differ from the county aggregate. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, which handles the largest volume of incidents, was the primary driver of the county’s overall crime reduction, reporting major decreases in aggravated assaults, larceny, and motor vehicle thefts. In contrast, the Beaufort Police Department reported sharp increases in certain violent crimes, specifically aggravated assaults, which rose from 46 to 73, and sexual battery cases, which more than doubled from 3 to 7. Meanwhile, the Port Royal Police Department recorded a notable statistical spike in aggravated assaults, jumping from a single incident in 2023 to 18 in 2024.

The Bluffton Police Department experienced a mixed year, characterized by notable improvements in property crimes contrasted by slight increases in violent offenses. While the overall volume of property crime decreased, the department recorded significant drops in specific categories, most notably a near 50% reduction in breaking and entering incidents, which fell from 50 to 26, and a substantial decline in motor vehicle thefts from 45 to 30. Conversely, violent crime metrics showed small but distinct increases in raw numbers; reported robberies doubled from 4 to 8, and sexual battery cases rose from 2 to 6, while aggravated assaults remained virtually unchanged with 30 reported incidents. Despite the uptick in violent categories, the raw numbers remain comparatively low, and the reduction in property-related offenses suggests a positive shift in theft-related trends within the town limits.
