Widgeon Point Preserve: A Lowcountry Gem and Conservation Success Story

Nestled on Lemon Island, just off Highway 170 in South Carolina’s stunning Lowcountry, Widgeon Point Preserve stands as a testament to successful land conservation and a tranquil haven for nature enthusiasts. This 162-acre passive park, co-owned by Beaufort County and the Beaufort County Open Land Trust, preserves a critical piece of coastal habitat and offers unparalleled views of the Broad River and Port Royal Sound.

A Diverse Coastal Ecosystem

The preserve is a rich mosaic of various coastal environments, making it a hotspot for wildlife viewing and ecological study. Visitors can wander through:

  • Mixed Pine-Hardwood Forest and Maritime Forest: Providing a canopy for woodland creatures.
  • Salt Marsh: Lining the Broad River, this vital habitat supports a myriad of marine life and provides expansive views.
  • Freshwater Pond: Often hosting impressive bird populations, including white pelicans and wood storks.

This diversity of habitats supports a rich array of wildlife, with frequent sightings of white-tailed deer, fox squirrels, and wading birds. A true crown jewel of the preserve is the presence of an active bald eagle nest near the parking area, offering a rare opportunity to observe these majestic birds.

Experience the Preserve

Widgeon Point is designed for passive recreation, encouraging visitors to connect with the natural world at their own pace. Open daily from dawn to dusk, key features and activities include:

  • The Nature Trail: A wide, flat, 0.7-mile earthen loop trail winds through the forested hummock island, providing scenic views of the river and marsh.
  • Bird Blind: A designated viewing structure overlooks the freshwater pond, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching and photography.
  • Amenities: The site includes a picnic pavilion, restrooms, and a water fountain equipped for dogs.
  • Event Barn: An existing rustic barn has been renovated and is available for event rentals.

Conservation Success Story: The Nine-Acre Completion

Widgeon Point’s existence as a protected natural space is a significant victory for conservation in the Lowcountry. The original 162-acre property, which could have been developed into up to 130 homes, was saved in 2007 with funding from the Beaufort County Rural and Critical Lands Program.

The North Widgeon Point Addition

The preserve’s conservation story reached a landmark moment with the acquisition of North Widgeon Point, a critical nine-acre addition. This “drumstick-shaped enclave of high ground” sits immediately adjacent to the main preserve, sharing frontage along the brackish pond, and extends the protected area all the way to the Broad River.

The property was purchased by Beaufort County for $2.7 million, concluding a lengthy effort to protect this vital land. The funding was secured through a collaborative effort involving the SC Conservation Bank, the Beaufort County Green Space Program, and the Beaufort County Rural and Land Preservation Program (RCLP).

This acquisition is highly significant as it marked the final project expenditure in the voter-approved RCLP program, which has successfully preserved nearly 30,000 acres of critical habitats and beloved community places. The protection of North Widgeon Point now ensures that every access point along Highway 170 between the Broad and Chechessee Rivers is permanently protected, completing a vital corridor that supports both wildlife and public access. As local officials noted, “Completing this project is a strong finale for the RCLP program.”

Widgeon Point Preserve continues to serve as a powerful example of how thoughtful planning and land preservation protect the region’s unique natural resources for future generations.
