About the Open Land Trust

The Open Land Trust (OLT) holds the distinction of being South Carolina’s first and oldest land trust, founded in 1971 by a small group of visionary citizens determined to protect the iconic views of the Beaufort River. Over the last five decades, the organization has expanded its reach far beyond the bluff on Bay Street, protecting more than 32,000 acres of significant ecological and cultural landscapes across the region. Through a combination of conservation easements and fee-simple acquisitions, the Trust safeguards working farms, wildlife habitats, and tidal marshes from overdevelopment. By fostering a deep connectivity between the land, water, and people, the Open Land Trust ensures that the natural character and “sense of place” that define the Lowcountry remain intact for generations to come.
